The Sheriff's Office has been receiving a number of calls for the last 30 or more minutes reporting a loud noise followed by a shaking of their homes.

At 10:22 PM the U.S. Geological Survey reported a 4.1 magnitude earthquake whose epicenter was near Edgefield, South Carolina.  Edgefield is  just northwest of Augusta, Georgia.

Earthquakes are not rare occurrences in this area although they are usually not this strong.  Many we have experienced here in the past were epicentered near Lake Sinclair in Putnam and Baldwin Counties.

There is nothing to be alarmed about and I'm sure you will hear more about it on the news tomorrow.

Have a pleasant evening.

Sheriff Howard R. Sills
